J&D Dental, a downtown Minneapolis dental office, has introduced a furry member to their team to provide emotional support for anxious patients during dental visits. Ollie, a 4-year-old English Goldendoodle, has become a beloved companion to patients seeking comfort during their dental procedures.
The innovative idea was initiated by April Kline, a hygienist at J&D Dental, who noticed the calming effect Ollie had on her husband, an apprehensive dental patient. During a routine visit, Ollie jumped on her husband’s lap, fell asleep, and created a remarkably stress-free experience.
Inspired by Ollie’s ability to alleviate anxiety, Kline proposed the idea of incorporating emotional support dogs into the dental practice to bring comfort and happiness to more patients. Ollie, though not a certified service animal, is fully vaccinated and adheres to occupational safety guidelines.
Studies have shown that interactions with dogs can significantly reduce stress levels, with just a short time spent with a canine companion leading to a drop in the stress hormone cortisol. As approximately 36% of Americans suffer from dentophobia, the dental fear that can cause extreme anxiety, Ollie’s presence has proven to be a game-changer for many patients.
Jennifer Herbert, the owner of J&D Dental, expressed her enthusiasm for the positive impact Ollie has made on both staff and patients. “Having Ollie here has been a game-changer. He brightens everyone’s day and he’s become a huge hit,” she shared.
