The Outback Steakhouse in Livonia Michigan is feeling the heat (much like the real Australian outback) for serving a 12-year-old boy a drink with alcohol in it. The boy had ordered a virgin strawberry daiquiri, but was served one with rum in it. His parents blamed the waiter for taking the order wrong, the waiter blamed the bartender for making the drink wrong, and everyone else blamed the 12-year-old for ordering a strawberry daiquiri. Said one onlooker from a nearby table, “what kind of kid does that?”
Surveillance footage revealed the real way everything went down. The boy asked the waiter for a strawberry daiquiri, and then his father chimed in “make it virgin.” But the waiter seemingly thought the dad had said it aggressively like, “make it, virgin!” because the waiter responded, “hey man, I get lots of girls. Leave me alone.”
When he received the drink, the child (whose identity is being hidden so people don’t make fun of him for ordering a strawberry daiquiri) noticed that it tasted funny.
"This tastes like grandma smells."
The boy began slurring his speech, but his family just assumed he was getting in the spirit of Outback Steakhouse by pretending to be Australian. But a little later, the boy felt like his heart was racing, so his parents gave him Tylenol and took him to the hospital. A blood test revealed that his blood alcohol level was only 0.02, which the doctor said put him in the category of “little wimp who doesn’t know how to handle his liquor.”
The next day, the boy was hungover, but his parents felt fantastic because Outback corporate called them to apologize and announced that their bill had been comped.
"My only regret is not ordering more food."
Outback Steakhouse announced that the staff would be retrained so this incident would not happen again. The 12-year-old has vowed to never drink alcohol again until he is of legal age, which in Michigan is 13.
