Spud Racer: Man Sets World Record with Lightning-Fast Mr. Potato Head Assembly

A 20-year-old man recently had a date with destiny when he faced off with an infamous shape-shifter by the name of Mr. Potato Head. He won by a nose—a plastic nose.

Declan McFerran hadn’t seen or owned a Mr. Potato Head since he was a small child, but we all know true champions are made, not born. With laser focus and vigorous training that would make Rocky look like a couch potato, the Northern Irishman was able to mash the competition by assembling a Mr. Potato Head toy in a spud-tacular 5.15 seconds—the fastest assembly of a Mr. Potato Head toy, ever.

Despite being Irish, winning the Guinness World Record for fastest Mr. Potato Head assembly did not come easy for McFerran. The record-breaker reportedly spent hours refining and perfecting his epic potato placement technique. His winning strategy started by taking Mr. P’s expressionless body, popping on the hat and then the legs. With bated breath and only seconds to go, he simultaneously attached the eyes, nose, and mustache in a single swift motion any 8-year-old would envy.

Even Mr. Potato Head himself was shocked by the speed and dexterity of McFerran’s expert assembly. At least he looked shocked; that might have just been the placement of the eyebrows.

McFerran claims he hasn’t let the celebrity status of being a Guinness World Record holder go to his own potato head, but word on the street is he will now only answer to the name “Spud King.”

As for future plans, Spud King plans to continue to work hard and play (with toys) hard, aiming to break even more non-Potato-Head world records in the future. The 20-year-old’s parents are thrilled with their son’s success. They couldn’t be prouder of their Guinness World Record-holding son—almost as proud as they would be if he were rearranging faces as an actual plastic surgeon.
